What Are Dental Implants?

What Are Dental Implants

A dental implant is a small, sturdy, titanium post that acts as the root structure would for a natural tooth. A dental implant is placed into your upper or lower jaw bone. After the bone has grown around the implant, implants can hold a crown, bridge or over-denture just like roots hold natural teeth in place. Dental implants offer the look and feel of natural teeth and offer stability because they fuse to your bone. Implants are very durable and can last a lifetime.

Who Provides Dental Implants

Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons are dentists specializing in surgery of the mouth, face and jaws. Oral surgeons receive an extra four to seven years of hospital-based surgical and medical training, after dental school. Dr. L. Douglas Israelsen is a board certified oral surgeon and has placed over 10,000 implants. He did his post graduate and residency training at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. Dr. Israelsen trained with Dr. Branemark, who developed dental implants.

Are You A Good Candidate

Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost one or more teeth due to periodontal disease or an injury. Candidates for dental implants need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. Dental implants require the same maintenance as natural teeth; this includes brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups. A thorough evaluation by Dr. Israelsen will help determine whether dental implants are right for you.

Who Is Involved In The Dental Implant Treatment

It takes the Oral Surgeon and the General Dentist or Prosthodontist to complete the treatment plan. The implant surgery is performed by the oral surgeon and the restorative crown is placed by a general dentist or prosthodontist. It is important that the specialists work together as a team for your dental implant treatment. We will need the name of the restorative Doctor so we can let him know the size and placement of the implant.

How Much Does It Cost

Dr. Israelsen offers a cash discount price of $1,295.00 per implant. This price includes IV sedation and a temporary abutment. If you have dental insurance the price is $1,615.00. There is an additional charge if an extraction is needed. Once the implant is placed, it will take 12 to 16 weeks for the implant to fuse with the bone. Once the implant has integrated, you will go see your general dentist who will place the permanent abutment and crown. The charge for these services will be billed by your general dentist. An estimate for the permanent abutment and crown is between $1,200.00 and $1,600.00.

Dental implants are the latest dental technology for replacing the roots of lost teeth. If you are missing a single tooth or multiple teeth, dental implants are the way to go. Dental implants help maintain the integrity of the jawbone and prevent deterioration of the bone that can take place with missing teeth. It is important to replace missing teeth as soon as possible for the full function of chewing and for a healthy, happy smile.
